Two weeks ago, I spent the afternoon by the pool with Ethan at our family’s reunion.  This was our first time meeting.  There were no handshakes or introductions.  There was a hot summer day and a cool pool surrounded by mutual and trusted loved ones. After being asked to keep an eye on Ethan for a few minutes, I couldn’t help but find myself fully captivated by his unique experience in our environment. Although Ethan is used to being carefully watched, I was still a bit nervous that photographing him would alter or rob him of his nature. Instead, he acknowledged and welcomed my temporary presence into his world without speaking a word.  I spent the greater part of the afternoon running around with and photographing Ethan as he touched, smelled, and experimented with his senses of the world around him. Capturing a small fraction of his perspective was a discovery to the beauty of simply existing. Ethan may be autistic, but he is far from unaware.

This afternoon asked me when was the last time that I was fully and truly anywhere. It also showed me that I didn’t know what that could be.
